Is It a Dupe? Mac Candy Yum Yum vs. Maybelline Fuchsia Fever

So I know that with Mac's new Quite Cute collection out, everyone is going nuts for the new lipsticks and blushes. Namely, the new Candy Yum Yum lipstick is probably the most popular item in the collection... it's already sold out in most places.

I got it knowing I wanted an eye seeringly bright pink lipstick for spring and summer. The formula was fantastic and once I applied it, I realized it looked a bit familiar...

On the left is Maybelline Fuchsia Fever and on the right is Mac Candy Yum Yum.

Now, I KNOW they don't look similar in the tube. When I pulled both of them out, I felt dumb for even thinking they looked similar. But, I gave it a swatch... and here's what I got:

Fuchsia Fever is on the left again and Candy Yum Yum on the right.

I know they're not identical, so I won't say it's a dupe. Fuchsia Fever has more of a blue tone and is a satiny finish, so it's more glossy. As Candy Yum Yum is a matte, it looks more opaque and has a stronger pink base. However, when I wore Candy Yum Yum with a gloss over top, they were nearly identical on my lips. Fuchsia Fever has some of the neon quality about it, especially in the sun. You could tinker with different lip liners and probably get it even closer.

It's really hard to show on camera because they don't show similar enough like they do in person. Standing about five feet from my husband with both on my hands, he couldn't tell the difference between the two. Though it's not a 100% match, identical dupe, I feel like the Maybelline lipstick is a great alternative for someone that either can't afford Mac, can't find the sold out lipstick, or just wants a really nice pink lipstick with a great formula that is in the same color family.

Fuchsia Fever is on the Maybelline website so I am assuming it's permanent.

Here's the point: Maybelline Fuchsia Fever is around $7 (you can definitely get it cheaper) for 0.15oz (4.2g) while Mac is $14.50 for 0.10oz (3g). You're getting more lipstick, in a very similar color, for half the price... I think it's a pretty good deal!

Let me know what you think :)

  1. They both look lovely. Fuschia Fever reminds me of MAC' Girl About Town though

  2. @Jinz: Hmmm, good point... Girl About Town is a bit less pastel/neon. It's hard to explain because Fuchsia Fever has a certain neon quality that doesn't quite capture on camera. I'll have to try doing comparison pics in daylight at some point!

  8. Thanks for the great review! Right now, the MAC Candy Yum Yum is sold out in all stores, except if you want to pay more than $50 in e-bay or amazon. :( While I was in the grocery the other day, I happen to come across Maybelline Fuchsia Fever (no idea that it's being compared to MCYY) and I really like the unique bright pink color so I bought the last one, yay! I agree with you that it's not a dupe, but with the right lipliner and gloss, this bang for your buck drugstore brand is totally worth trying. While waiting for stores to offer Mac Candy Yum Yum again, I'm going to stick with this cheaper lip color (which I really like) bec. it glides smoothly on my lips, it has a light sweet scent and bec. it is just half a shade close to MCYY! :)

  9. @Pappetee: Yaaay I'm glad you like it! The Color Sensational line is pretty fabulous. Even if it's not an exact dupe, it's still a great color, enjoyyy :)

  10. @ Cydonian, thanks a lot! :) My first Maybelline Color Sensational lipcolor experience is a blast. I went to 4 stores last weekend and all the Maybelline Fuchsia Fever are selling like pancakes, hehehe... Maybe due to the fact that MAC Candy Yum Yum is still sold out and personally, I don't want to pay more than $25 for a lipcolor in e-bay.
