High Voltage Cosmetics Review + FOTD

**ATTENTION: AS OF 8/4/2011, I CAN NO LONGER RECOMMEND HIGH VOLTAGE COSMETICS AS A RELIABLE INDIE COMPANY. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PERUSE MY POSTS ABOUT HER PRODUCTS BUT I NO LONGER FEEL COMFORTABLE PERSONALLY RECOMMENDING THEM FOR PURCHASE.**
I indulged in High Voltage's buy one, get one free sale a couple of weeks back. Needless to say -- I picked up a lot of samples.

I will start off by saying that Jasmine's (the owner) customer service was fantastic. I had to bold that because we easily spent 30 minutes on Twitter discussing colours and what my favorites were, what I was looking for in potential colours, etc. She helped me pick half of my order, I believe, and then provided a TON of additional samples. She is absolutely lovely and I really want to stress how amazing the service was. My items arrived very quickly and were packaged securely.

I am starting to dive further into indie companies because really, the service is more personalized and the owners are easily accessible. Also, I feel the colours are more unique.

Anyway! Swatch time! I will warn you that I got A LOT of blues and purples... (are you surprised?) These are all swatched on bare skin, no primer (I did pixie epoxy shots too, but will discuss that later)

Top row: Big Break, High Voltage, Secrets & Lies
Bottom Row: Starbreaker, Black Hole Sun

Big Break
is an odd shade of mauve that shifts purple and gold. Very unique.
High Voltage is a frosty sky blue.
Secrets & Lies is a "blurple" with subtle shimmer.
Starbreaker is a wowomg limey chartreusesque green.
Black Hole Sun is a satiny black with what appears to be silver sparkle.

Top row: Movie Star, Little Miss Perfect, I Love RocknRoll
Bottom Row: Born to Rock, Bootleg

Movie Star is a vibrant blue based purple with golden shimmer.
Little Miss Perfect is a cornflower blue with an antiqued gold shimmer.
I love Rock'n'Roll is a very unique neon yellow with a slight green tint.
Born to Rock is a blue to purple duochromey shade.
Bootleg is an impressive black with a purple and multicolour shimmer shift. Really stunning.

Top row: Gotta Bad Attitude, Glam Rock, Snowball Fight
Bottom row: Snow Blind, Brunette eyebrow powder
2nd pic: Close up of Snowball Fight

Gotta Bad Attitude is a lovely shade of lilac... this is what I want Mac Beautiful Iris to be.
Glam Rock is a vibrant cobalt blue.
Snowball Fight is a purple that shifts gold in certain lights.
Snow Blind is a darker version of Big Break, to me anyway.
Brunette Eyebrow Powder is close to Mac's Brown Down with less red tones.

Last spam, I promise! Some colours over Pixie Epoxy:

The colours are: Snowball Fight, Bootleg, Born to Rock, Little Miss Perfect and High Voltage.

How gorgeous is Bootleg, right? Even without Pixie Epoxy, it is fantastic! I really love all of the colours -- even though I picked a lot that were sort of similar. I was just drawn to their blues and purples, I feel like that is what this company does best.

The colours are unique and have tons of dimension when you look at them in different lights. That effect definitely transfers onto the eye and I have to say that I am impressed by how well it transfers. I am excited to keep playing with these babies!

You guys know I hate baggies but these were honestly packaged well -- the only colours that were spread out all over the bag were the two darkest - Black Hole Sun and Bootleg, but that is probably due to the amount of black mica in those. But of course, screw top lids would be so much better 0:-).

Overall, approved for purchase. Definitely check out Jasmine and her company at http://hvcosmetics.zxq.net/

When I went to do my look, I instantly reached for Starbreaker. I mean, how could you not? I like the look -- I think I should have used a stronger purple for the outer edge of my lid -- Born to Rock's blue shift was blending in too much with Little Miss Perfect and High Voltage, lol. I also am beginning to like the Maybelline Define A Lash... I've used it a couple of times now and it's not clumping on me as badly. Last thing before pictures -- the super close eye shots are edited slightly -- I had a blotch of liquid liner right in the center of my eyelid that I edited out. I usually leave my photos the way they are as I hate to edit them, even if there are flaws, but that blotch was bothering me.

Here is what I came up with:

FACE:

- Clinique Redness Solutions daily base
- Mac Studio Fix powder, NC20
- Maybelline Super Stay concealer "Cream"]
- Mac Studio Finish concealer, NW20
- Sleek Rose Gold blush
- Mac Espresso eyeshadow (brows)

EYES:
- Too Faced Shadow Insurance
- Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy
- High Voltage "Starbreaker" eyeshadow
- High Voltage "High Voltage" eyeshadow
- High Voltage "Little Miss Perfect" eyeshadow
- High Voltage "Born to Rock" eyeshadow
- Revlon eyeshadow in Vintage Lace
- e.l.f. Liquid Liner in Midnight
- Maybelline Define A Lash mascara in Very Black

LIPS:
- Mac Viva Glam Gaga lipstick
- Essence Rising Star lipgloss

What do you guys think? Tell me your virtual order from High Voltage :)

  1. Love the look! I loooove Starbreaker, too. I need to dig it out. I only have a few things from HV but thier Heart of Glass lip... whatever it is.. is seriously amazing. It's pretty similar to Milani Rose Hip but brighter and longer wearing. I really like the look of Snowball fight and Secrets and Lies.

  3. Snowball Fight is stunning - I'd love to have it for an NYE look, but I'm not sure I have the patience to use samples...I'm lazy and like my stuff pressed - I don't even own one MAC pigment!
