Stila Backstage Palette Swatches, Review

I had a request for a Sephora CP for a girl I know in Germany, so was happy to do one for her as the Friends and Family Sale is still going strong. I'm not a huge fan of Sephora; the only thing I really buy there is Urban Decay and my Too Faced Shadow Insurance, but that's because the Ulta near me sucks and never has it in stock.

I need a $15 item to get free shipping and the Backstage Palette fit the bill. I had seen a few other reviews on Temptalia specifically, so I figured for $15.20, 6 eyeshadows... can you go wrong?

Luckily I didn't! This palette is really nice. The packaging is sturdy and I love the design and colour of the outside. It's quite compact, smaller than an iPhone, I'd say... but about two times the size of a credit card or ID.

Top two pictures are no flash, bottom is flash.

Top row, left to right: Chiffon, Flamingo and Pacific
Bottom row, left to right: Luster, Poetic and Coal

Swatched in the same order.

Chiffon is a frosty highlight shade that leans a peachy pink.
Flamingo is a shimmery fuschia with purple duochrome and blue tones. As Temptalia said, a brighter version of Mac Stars n Rockets.
Pacific is a gorgeous shimmering deep blue, similar to Mac Deep Truth.
Luster is my personal favorite, a muddy taupe with gold and purple undertones.
Poetic is another frosty highlight that leans cooler and more pink. This is the only throw away shade to me.
Coal is nothing like the name implies... but instead a rich, pigmented teal with a blackened base.

The shades in this palette are very soft. I have never owned or dealt with Stila much at all... done a bit of swatching in the store but that's about it. Therefore I can't really comment on how this compares to their regular eyeshadows. The texture is quite similar to the shimmery shades from the Urban Decay Naked palette... soft, smooth, buttery textured and easy to blend.

The original price of this palette was $28. That is a good deal considering the price of Stila's regular eyeshadows, that makes each shadow about $4.66, and I didn't even pay full price. I paid $15.20 as I said, which makes each shadow an insane deal at $2.53 each! That is great for a prestige brand.

My first look with this palette when without issue... the shadows blended like a dream. I did have to pack a little extra of Flamingo on, but I wanted a brighter hot pink effect for the shape I was creating. I love the way this turned out.

The next look was done today. I wanted to use the other 3 colours to show case all 6... I have to say that the blue in the palette, Pacific, is terrible. I'm sorry. I will admit that I had put on primer 1-2 hours prior to actually applying the eye makeup, but I've never had so much fallout from a pressed eyeshadow before... EVER. I was dabbing the brush in one time, tapping off and it was still smeared all down my cheeks by the time I was done. I covered a half of a paper towel in blue smudges by the end of the look!

I want to like how this came out... but something about it irks me. Coat is a beautiful shade but Pacific goes a bit muddy... oh well, maybe you'll like it.
